Short answer
Replacing one garage door section in Houston typically costs $500 to $1,200 according to Cost Insight Hub's 2026 figures, against several thousand for a whole new door. It only works when the matching section is still made, so the first step is reading the maker and model off the door.
When a single section is the right repair
Sectional doors are built from horizontal panels hinged together, so one damaged section can come out without disturbing the rest. That makes sense when the other sections are straight and rust-free and when the maker still produces a matching panel in the same profile, gauge and color.
If several sections are damaged, the door is a discontinued model, or the color has faded far from what a new panel will look like, a full replacement can end up the better value. We tell you which way the numbers point before you order anything.

Replace one section or the whole door?
It depends on how much of the door is damaged and whether the panel is still made.
| Situation | Usually best | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One dented section, rest sound | Replace the section | A fraction of the cost of a new door |
| Two or more damaged sections | Compare both quotes | Panel costs add up quickly |
| Model discontinued | Replace the door | A mismatched section looks wrong and may not fit |
| Rust through several sections | Replace the door | New panels would sit beside failing ones |
What a section replacement includes
- Identifying the maker, model and color
- Ordering a matching section
- Removing the damaged section safely
- New hinges where the old ones are bent
- New bottom seal on a bottom section
- Re-fitting rollers and cables
- Rebalancing the springs for the door's weight
- Auto-reverse and full-cycle testing
What a panel replacement costs
Cost Insight Hub's 2026 guide puts single-section panel replacement at $500 to $1,200 nationally. The price depends mostly on the section's size, construction and whether it is in stock.
- 1
Section position. Bottom sections need a seal and cable brackets too.
- 2
Construction. Insulated and wood-look sections cost more than single-layer steel.
- 3
Door width. A double-door section is larger and heavier.
- 4
Windows. A section with window inserts costs more to match.
- 5
Shipping and lead time. Some sections are ordered from the maker.
Dented bottom section
The bottom section takes most of the hits: a car that rolled back too far, a mower, a bike. It also carries the bottom brackets where the lift cables anchor, so a bad dent there can affect how the cables sit. Replacing the bottom section usually means a new bottom seal and fresh bracket hardware as well, which is the right time to check whether the seal retainer has rusted along its length. We also check the bottom brackets for rust while the old section is off.

Cracked or split panel
Steel sections crack along the stiffening ribs or at the hinge points, usually after the door was forced against a broken spring or a blocked opener. Wood and composite panels split along the grain. A crack at a hinge point weakens the whole section, so we replace rather than patch it, and we look for the cause so the new panel does not crack the same way. Cracks near the top section can also come from an opener arm bracket pulling on a thin panel, which a reinforcing strut fixes.

Matching a section to an older door
We read the maker's label, usually on an end stile, to identify the model, then check that the replacement matches the panel design, thickness, insulation and color. Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton and C.H.I. doors are the most common in Houston, and many of their current lines are still made. When a model is discontinued, we tell you before quoting a replacement section. We also check whether the hinges, rollers and struts on the old door will suit the new panel, so the whole door keeps running as one piece and the new section does not stand out in use.
How a section replacement runs
Identify the door
Maker, model, color and section size read off the door.
Confirm and order
Price and availability checked before anything is ordered.
Remove the damaged section
Door secured, tension relieved, section unbolted.
Fit the new section
New hinges and seal where needed, rollers and cables refitted.
Rebalance and test
Springs adjusted for the door's weight, then full cycles.
Matching panels on newer Cypress doors
In Cypress, master-planned communities such as Bridgeland have been building since 2006, with roughly 19,000 homes planned at full buildout. Doors installed in that period are usually current or recent models, so a matching section is still in production and a single-panel repair is a realistic option. Older doors elsewhere in the metro are more often discontinued, which changes the math.
Brands we service and install
Matching sections are easiest on doors from Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton and C.H.I. Overhead Doors, the makers we see most in Houston garages.
Questions about this job
Garage door panel questions
Yes, on sectional doors, as long as the maker still makes a matching section.
We read the model from the door's label and match the profile, thickness, insulation and color.
Then a matching section is usually not available, and a new door is often the better choice. We tell you before quoting.
A brand-new section can look brighter than a door that has faded for years. We mention it when the difference is likely to show.
The swap itself is usually a few hours; the wait is mostly for the section to arrive.
Small dents can sometimes be eased, but creases and cracks weaken the section, so we replace those.
