Short answer
Replacing a garage door in Houston typically costs $800 to $2,200 installed for a standard single-car steel door and $1,700 to $4,000 for an insulated double, per Raynor Door Authority's August 2026 figures. The door style, insulation and whether the opener stays all move the price.
When a new door is the better choice
A repair is the right call when the sections are sound. Replacement makes sense when the steel has rusted through at the bottom, several sections are cracked or dented, the door is a style the maker no longer supplies, or you want insulation or a different look.
A new door goes in on new tracks, rollers, hinges and springs sized to its weight, so nothing worn carries over. We measure the opening, headroom and side room before you choose, because those numbers decide which doors and openers will fit.

Comparing door materials for a Houston garage
Every material works here. What changes is upkeep, heat and price.
| Material | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Steel, uninsulated | Lowest cost, many styles | Dents more easily, passes heat |
| Steel, insulated | Stiffer, quieter, holds back heat | Costs more than a bare steel door |
| Aluminum and glass | Modern look, light | Privacy and heat gain through the glass |
| Wood | Natural look, custom sizes | Needs refinishing in humid weather |

What a new garage door costs
Raynor Door Authority's August 2026 guide puts a standard single-car steel door at $800 to $2,200 installed, an insulated double at $1,700 to $4,000, and wood or custom carriage house doors at $3,500 to $10,000 and up. LawnStarter adds $280 to $700 when a new opener goes in at the same time. We quote your door after measuring the opening.
- 1
Size. Doubles cost more than singles, and taller openings more again.
- 2
Material and insulation. Insulated steel costs more than bare steel; wood and glass more again.
- 3
Windows and hardware. Window inserts and decorative handles add to the price.
- 4
Wind rating. A windstorm-rated door costs more and is required in some areas.
- 5
Opener. Keeping a compatible opener saves money; a new one adds cost.
Steel raised-panel doors
Steel raised-panel doors are the most common replacement in Houston subdivisions: durable, affordable and available in many colors and window options. Thicker gauges resist dents better, and an insulated core adds rigidity as well as heat resistance. We show you the gauge and insulation options side by side, so the price difference makes sense. We also bring color samples and window layouts, because a door's color and windows change the look of the house more than most owners expect. Steel doors in lighter colors also stay cooler in afternoon sun than dark ones.

Single and double openings
Most Houston homes have either one double door or two single doors. A double is cheaper per foot of opening; two singles keep one side working if the other has a problem, and they suit homes where the center post is structural. We measure both ways when the framing allows a change. Converting two singles to one double, or the reverse, means framing work around the opening, so we look at the header and posts before quoting either way. That framing is included in the written price so there are no surprises on installation day.

Removing and hauling the old door
Tear-out is part of the job: we let the tension off the old springs safely, take the door down section by section, remove the old tracks and hardware, and haul everything away. The opening is checked for rot or damage in the jamb and header before the new door goes up. If we find rot or termite damage in the jamb or header, we show you before the new door goes up, since mounting new track into soft wood is the most common cause of early track problems. Small repairs can usually be made the same day.

Replacement doors on the south side
Pearland grew from 37,640 residents in 2000 to 125,828 in 2020, and much of its housing went up in that window, so many of its doors are now reaching the age where replacement beats repair. Most of Pearland also sits in Brazoria County, which is inside TDI's designated catastrophe area, and garage doors are on the list of items checked for a windstorm certificate. We ask for your address before quoting so the door meets the rating it needs.
How long a replacement takes
Most single and double residential doors are removed and replaced in one working day once the new door is on site. The bigger wait is usually the order itself, since doors are made to the opening size and the color and windows you choose.
Brands we service and install
We install doors from Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, C.H.I. Overhead Doors and Raynor, and we pair them with LiftMaster, Chamberlain or Genie openers.
Questions about this job
Garage door replacement questions
When several sections are rusted, cracked or dented, the parts are no longer made, or repairs keep stacking up, replacement is usually the better value.
Usually one working day on site once the new door has arrived.
Often yes, if it is compatible with the new door's weight and has the safety features current openers need.
Yes, removal and disposal of the old door and hardware is part of the job.
An insulated steel door holds back far more heat than a bare steel door, which matters if the garage is attached or used as a workspace.
In TDI's designated catastrophe area, which includes Brazoria County, a windstorm certificate requires a rated door. We check your address before quoting.
