Short answer
A storm-damaged garage door in Houston should be secured before anything else, because a bowed or jammed door can drop or let wind into the house. Complex repairs typically run $300 to $860 according to This Old House's 2026 figures, and doors bent across several sections usually need replacing.

What storms do to a garage door
Wind pushes on the whole face of a closed door. A standard door without bracing flexes inward at the middle, which can bend sections, pull rollers out of the track and crack hinges. If the door gives way, wind pressure inside the garage pushes up on the roof.
Water does slower damage: debris and silt in the tracks, wet opener wiring at the sensors, and rusting bottom brackets in the weeks after. We check both when we come out, and we photograph what we find so you have a record for your insurer.

Door bowed or pushed in by wind
A door bowed inward has usually bent its sections along the middle and pulled some rollers from the track. Even if it still moves, the bent sections will crack at the hinges over the next few cycles. We secure it, check every section for creases, and give you the choice of replacing the damaged sections or the door, depending on how many are affected and whether the model is still made. Once the door is down and secured, we photograph the damage from the inside and outside before any parts come off.

Debris and water in the tracks
Floodwater and wind leave grit, leaves and silt in the bottom of the tracks, and the rollers grind through it. Water at floor level also reaches the safety sensors and their wiring. We clean the tracks, test the sensors and wiring, and look at the bottom brackets and cables, which rust quickly after they sit wet. Silt left in the photo-eye housings can make the door reverse for weeks after a flood, which is why we clean and test the sensors even when they appear to work. We also rinse the bottom seal so it seats on the slab again.

Making the opening secure tonight
When the door cannot close, the house is open to weather and to anyone walking by. Our first job is to make it secure: bring the door down under control and lock it, brace it, or clamp it in the closed position until parts arrive. A secured door also keeps more rain out of the garage while you wait. Securing comes before any repair quote, so you are not deciding on a door replacement in the dark or in the rain. Once the opening is closed, we can talk through options and prices in daylight.
How long storm repairs take
Securing a door takes well under an hour. Repairs with parts on hand are often finished the same visit, but storm weeks bring a rush on sections and full doors, so a door that needs new sections may be secured first and finished when the parts arrive.
Storm damage and the coastal wind rules
Houston has lived through outages like Hurricane Ike in 2008, which left about 2.1 to 2.2 million CenterPoint customers without power, and storms like it bend doors as well as cutting the opener. On the south side, Brazoria County is one of the coastal counties in TDI's designated catastrophe area, and garage doors are on the list of items checked for a windstorm certificate. If your damaged door is there, we quote the replacement with the rating it needs.
What storm repairs cost
This Old House's 2026 guide puts complex repairs at $300 to $860 nationally, and Cost Insight Hub puts a single-section replacement at $500 to $1,200. A door bent across several sections is usually a replacement. We price the work after we see it.
- 1
How many sections are bent. One section is a repair; several usually mean a new door.
- 2
Track and hardware damage. Bent track, cracked hinges and pulled rollers add up.
- 3
Water damage. Sensors, wiring and bottom brackets may need replacing.
- 4
Wind rating. A rated replacement door costs more where it is required.
- 5
Parts availability. Storm weeks can stretch lead times on sections and doors.
Questions about this job
Storm-damaged garage door questions
Not until it has been checked. Bent sections and pulled rollers can let the door drop or crack further.
We photograph and describe the damage so you have a record. Your insurer decides what is covered.
If you are in TDI's designated catastrophe area, a windstorm certificate requires a rated door. Elsewhere, a rated door is an option worth pricing.
Not always. Power surges and wet sensor wiring are common causes. We test before replacing anything.
We secure the opening so the house is closed, then come back when parts arrive.
Yes, along with checking the sensors, wiring and bottom brackets that sat in the water.
