Short answer
An insulated garage door in Houston typically costs $1,700 to $3,700 installed according to Raynor Door Authority's August 2026 figures, more than a bare steel door. In return it slows heat moving through the door, adds stiffness and runs quieter, which matters most on attached garages and garages used as workshops.
What insulation changes
An uninsulated steel door is a single sheet of metal. In direct sun it heats up and radiates that heat into the garage, and in an attached garage some of it reaches the rooms beside and above it. An insulated door sandwiches foam between two steel skins, which slows that heat transfer.
The foam also stiffens the sections, so the door dents less and rattles less, and a sealed sandwich panel is noticeably quieter as it rolls. For most Houston homes with an attached garage, those side benefits are as important as the temperature.

Comparing insulated door options
Every option below is a real improvement over bare steel. The differences are in stiffness, noise and price.
| Option | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Polystyrene insulated steel | Lower price, cooler garage | Less stiff than polyurethane |
| Polyurethane insulated steel | Highest R-value per inch, quiet, stiff | Higher price |
| Insulation kit on an old door | Low cost, quick | Adds weight; springs must be rebalanced |
What an insulated door install includes
- Measuring the opening and headroom
- Choosing insulation, style and color
- Removing and hauling the old door
- New tracks, rollers and hinges
- Springs sized for the heavier door
- New bottom seal and stop molding
- Opener checked for the new weight
- Balance and auto-reverse testing
What an insulated door costs
Raynor Door Authority's August 2026 guide puts insulated steel doors at $1,700 to $3,700 installed and an insulated double door at $1,700 to $4,000. We quote your door after measuring.
- 1
Insulation type. Polyurethane costs more than polystyrene.
- 2
Door size. Doubles and taller doors cost more.
- 3
Style and windows. Carriage overlays and window inserts add cost.
- 4
Springs and opener. Heavier doors need stronger springs and sometimes a new opener.
- 5
Wind rating. Required on some properties, adds to the price.
Polystyrene or polyurethane
Polystyrene doors use rigid foam boards fitted between the steel skins. They are the more affordable insulated option and a real step up from a bare steel door. Polyurethane doors have foam injected between the skins, where it expands and bonds to the steel, giving a higher R-value for the same thickness and a stiffer, quieter section. We usually suggest polyurethane for garages used as living or work space, and polystyrene where the budget is tight but the garage still needs to be cooler.

R-value in a Houston garage
R-value measures how well the door resists heat flow; a higher number resists more. In Houston the heat comes from the outside in, mostly from sun on the door face, so color and orientation matter as well as R-value. A light-colored insulated door on a west-facing garage will run far cooler than a dark bare one. We look at which way the door faces and how the garage is used before recommending a level, rather than selling the highest number by default.

Insulating the door you have
Insulation kits of foam panels can be fitted inside an existing steel door. They help a little, but they add weight, which throws off the spring balance, and they do not stiffen the door like a factory-insulated section. If your door is sound and you only want a modest improvement, we can fit a kit and rebalance the springs; if the door is near the end of its life, a factory-insulated replacement is usually the better use of the money.

Opener checked for the new weight, full cycles run.
Why insulation pays off in Houston
Houston's summers are long and hot, and in most subdivisions the garage faces the street with the door taking direct sun for hours. That makes the door the largest single surface heating the garage, and in homes with bedrooms or a game room built over it, the room above feels it first. Insulated doors are the upgrade we recommend most often here, ahead of decorative options.
Brands we service and install
We install insulated doors from Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton and C.H.I. Overhead Doors in both polystyrene and polyurethane construction.
Questions about this job
Insulated garage door questions
For attached garages and garages used as work or living space, usually yes. It also makes the door quieter and stiffer.
It depends on how the garage is used and which way it faces. Polyurethane doors give the most insulation for the thickness.
Yes. Light colors absorb less sun, which matters as much as insulation on a west-facing garage.
Not always, but insulated doors are heavier, so we check the opener can handle the weight.
Yes, with a kit, but it adds weight and the springs must be rebalanced. A new insulated door does more.
Yes. The foam core stiffens the sections.
