Short answer
A wind-rated garage door is built and tested to resist a stated wind pressure, and in TDI's designated catastrophe area, which includes Brazoria County and most of Pearland, garage doors are on the list of items checked for a windstorm certificate. Inland Houston does not require one, but a rated door is still an option worth pricing.
What a wind rating means
A wind-rated door has been tested to hold a stated design pressure, both pushing in and pulling out, without failing. It gets there with heavier steel, reinforcement struts across the sections, stronger hinges and track, and specific anchoring into the frame. Each rated door carries a label and paperwork listing the pressure it is approved for.
In TDI's designated catastrophe area, work on a property needs a windstorm certificate for coverage through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, and garage doors are among the items an inspection covers. That makes the rating a paperwork matter as well as a strength one.

Bracing kit or rated door?
Both add strength. Only one satisfies a windstorm certificate.
| Option | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Retrofit bracing kit | Adding strength to a sound inland door | Not a rated door for certificate purposes |
| Wind-rated replacement door | Catastrophe-area properties and coastal exposure | Higher cost, heavier door |
| Rated door plus impact glass | Doors with windows in exposed spots | Highest cost |
What a wind-rated door install includes
- Checking whether the address is in the catastrophe area
- Matching the rating to the opening and exposure
- Removing the old door
- Installing the rated door to the maker's instructions
- Rated track, hinges and anchoring
- Springs sized for the heavier door
- Label and documents kept for the inspection
- Balance and auto-reverse testing
What drives the cost of a wind-rated door
Wind-rated doors cost more than standard doors of the same size and style. These are the factors that set the price.
- 1
Required rating. Higher design pressures need heavier construction.
- 2
Door size. Wide doors need more reinforcement.
- 3
Windows. Impact-rated glass adds cost.
- 4
Insulation and style. Same choices as any door, priced on top of the rating.
- 5
Opener. Heavier rated doors may need a stronger opener.
Windstorm certificate (WPI-8)
TDI issues the WPI-8 certificate of compliance after a windstorm inspection of new or ongoing work in the designated catastrophe area, and TWIA requires a certificate on structures built, altered or remodeled there. For a garage door, that means installing a door rated for the required pressure, installed to the maker's tested instructions, with the label and documents available for the inspection. We confirm whether your address sits in the area before quoting, because the answer changes which doors we can offer you.

Retrofit bracing kits
Some existing doors can be strengthened with a bracing kit of vertical or horizontal struts that adds resistance before a storm. A kit can help a sound door hold up better, but it does not turn an unrated door into a rated one for certificate purposes. We tell you which you need: a kit for added strength on an inland door, or a rated door where the certificate is the goal. Kits also add weight, so the springs are rebalanced afterward.

Design pressure ratings
Ratings are given as positive and negative design pressures, in pounds per square foot, and the required rating depends on the location, the exposure and the size of the opening. A wide double door facing open ground on the coast needs more than a single door in a sheltered street. We work from the requirements for your address and the door maker's approved ratings, rather than guessing, and we keep the paperwork with the job for your records. The rating label stays on the door after installation.
How a wind-rated door project runs
Check the address
Is it in the designated catastrophe area?
Set the rating
Opening size and exposure decide the requirement.
Choose and order
A door approved for that rating, in your style.
Install to spec
Maker's tested instructions followed, anchoring included.
Document and test
Label and paperwork kept, door balanced and tested.
Where the windstorm rules apply near Houston
TDI's designated catastrophe area takes in the 14 coastal counties, including Brazoria and Galveston, plus the part of Harris County east of State Highway 146. Pearland sits mostly in Brazoria County, and it grew from 37,640 residents in 2000 to 125,828 in 2020, so a lot of its housing is reaching the age for a first door replacement. TWIA requires a certificate on work done in the area, so we confirm the address before quoting.
Brands we service and install
Wind-rated doors are available from Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, C.H.I. Overhead Doors and Raynor, each with their own approved ratings.

Wind-rated garage door questions
Not in most of inland Houston. In TDI's designated catastrophe area, which includes Brazoria County, a windstorm certificate requires rated products.
Most of Pearland sits in Brazoria County, which is one of the coastal counties in TDI's designated catastrophe area. We confirm your address before quoting.
The certificate of compliance TDI issues after a windstorm inspection of work in the designated area.
A bracing kit adds strength, but it does not make an unrated door a rated one for certificate purposes.
Yes, so springs and sometimes the opener are sized up.
Yes, with glass approved for the rating, which usually means impact-rated glass.
